Men: What to Borrow from the Makeup Bag (and What Not to!)

Youre all alone in the bathroom and theres the makeup bag. Who knows what mysterious anti-aging, breakout-hiding, look-enhancing secrets lay hidden inside? You check the mirror again. Your eyes are looking a little tired and where did those dark circles come from? Is that a pimple on your chin?

The bag beckons

Weve all thought about it and, truth be told, most of us have checked our inhibitions at the door and taken a trip through the dark recesses of the makeup bag. Some of us have come out ahead and others have taken some wrong turns. If you arent ready to take the leap of walking up to the cosmetics counter and buying mens makeup, but are still looking for a little discreet help, here are some basic dos and donts for pilfering cosmetics and skincare products from your significant other.

Katrina may once again boost Mobile Mardi Gras

MOBILE -- Mobile's Mardi Gras parades couldn't be staged without float builders like Stephen Mussell, who has built a career on the carnival's demand for rolling showpieces of splashy colors and lights.

His year-round work was seen by an apparent record number of Mobile Mardi Gras revelers last year, an uptick attributed partly to Hurricane Katrina. The port city, with more than 30 parades over the weeks culminating on Fat Tuesday, may benefit again this year as coastal Mississippi's festivities in Biloxi will remain cut back to one parade due to Katrina damage.

New Orleans, which has long enjoyed the nation's largest carnival, is also trying to revive its celebration and expects a parade schedule comparable to pre-Katrina levels.

Leon Maisel, president and CEO of the Mobile Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau, said police estimated more than 1 million attended carnival here in 2006, an apparent record attributed to the Katrina damage to the Mississippi coast and New Orleans.

Panel: No failure limits on birth control pills

The government shouldn't set failure limits on birth control pills because that could put less-effective but still beneficial contraceptives off limits to women, federal health advisers recommended Wednesday.

The FDA scheduled meetings both Tuesday and Wednesday with its outside experts to gather advice on future guidelines that drug makers could follow in seeking approval for new hormonal contraceptives.

The FDA is looking at how well studies done prior to approval of new birth control pills reflected their "real-world" use. Typically, that use is less consistent and reliable than it is in clinical studies.

Also, newer versions of the pill aren't being tested on women who reflect the broader population. The women in clinical trials are younger, skinnier and healthier than are U.S.

First lady's luncheon is a tribute to women of Alabama

Last Friday night, Gov. Bob Riley's campaign leaders and friends gathered to begin a long weekend of inaugural celebrations with a Boots and Barbecue event on the grounds of the Governor's Mansion. It was a casual affair with a western flair, one of the hundreds of events Patsy Riley has hosted during her tenure as Alabama's first lady.

A consummate organizer, Mrs. Riley typically takes a very hands-on approach, managing the details of every gathering to make sure her guests have an unforgettable Alabama experience. Saturday's first lady's luncheon at the Wynlakes Golf and Country Club was no different -- she chose alternating champagne and celadon-colored Bichon table linens to help create an elegant afternoon ambience in the location's Swan Ballroom.

She called in Wayne Adams of Tuscaloosa to create luscious centerpieces of hydrangea, roses, orchids and lilies in round and tall crystal vases at more than 20 tables.
